How To Choose A Survival Blanket

There are some important factors to think about when choosing the best survival blanket for you. Think about each thing on the list and decide if it is something you want in your survival blanket.

Weight – the weight for an emergency blanket can vary depending on the material of the blanket. A mylar emergency blanket can typically weigh around a couple of ounces. If you have a blanket made of a thicker material such as wool, the blanket can weight up to a few pounds.

Material – the material is another important factor because it can affect the weight and the actual portability of the blanket. Most survival blankets are made of the mylar material. Mylar is the cheapest way to go when purchasing a survival blanket. There are other materials on the market such as wool and they will give you the same benefits as mylar.

Durability – most often the survival blankets only weight a couple of ounces so they are not very durable. With them being so lightweight they can get ripped and snagged easily. These blankets are only supposed to be used in emergencies.

Cost – the cost of emergency blankets can fluctuate depending on many factors such as material, windproof/ waterproof, and the length of the blanket. Most mylar blankets are extremely affordable.

Waterproof/Windproof – You want to have an emergency blanket that will be waterproof and also windproof. Emergency blankets are used in all sorts of natural disasters and emergency situations. There are blankets on the market that are not waterproof and it is very important that you find one that is.

Types of Survival Blankets

There are three main types of survival blankets they are mylar, wool, and polar fleece. Below I am going to more depth of these three blankets. Make sure you take the time to read over them so you can pick the best survival blanket for you.

Mylar Blankets

If you have never heard of a mylar blanket maybe you have heard of its other names such as solar blanket or space blanket. These blankets are made out of aluminum and plastic. They attach the aluminum to a thin layer of plastic. The aluminum is very reflective so it keeps your heat trapped inside the blanket. The goal is to have 80% of your body heat reflected back towards you when using a mylar blanket.

Mylar blankets are also waterproof. You want your blanket to be waterproof because it will stop any evaporation. Evaporation will take your heat away. These blankets are also windproof. They will block the wind. You can also use these blankets in your shelter to block out wind and water.

The durability of mylar blankets is not the best. They are very thin so they can get punctured by something and rip. Mylar blankets are cheap and very affordable for anyone looking for an emergency blanket. On the other hand, they are cheap which also means that they can get ruined easily. I suggest getting a few mylar blankets to rotate through when you are on your camping trip.

Pros

  • Keeps your body warm by reflecting your own body heat back to you.
  • They can be folded down very compactly to the size of your hand.
  • They have multiple uses than just a heat reflector.
  • They are water, weather, and windproof.
  • Very inexpensive
  • Very lightweight.

Cons

  • They can tear very easily or get punctured.
  • You need to be careful because it is extremely delicate.

Wool Blankets

A wool blanket is a very versatile blanket. Wool naturally repels water and in light rain you will stay warm. If you get caught out in a big storm or a lot of water then the natural water repellent abilities will not work as well.

Wool blankets are extremely durable. It is very hard for the wool blanket to get ripped and punctured. You can use a wool blanket in your shelter as well. Wool is also a natural flame retardant. So, if a few sparks fly out of your campfire and land on your wool blanket it shouldn’t spark up in flames.

You can get wool blankets at a great affordable price. You need to make sure that you are buying 100% wool fiber blanket. 100% wool blankets will give you all the benefits that we talked about above. Do not buy a wool blanket if it is made of repurposed synthetic wool.

Pros

  • Can repel water from the body as well as a waterproof shell.
  • Great for insolation.
  • Extremely durable material.
  • Can be very affordable depending on what type of wool blanket you are buying.
  • Can be folded down pretty compactly.
  • Somewhat fire resistant.

Cons

  • Sometimes they can be heavy.
  • If the wool blanket gets completely soaked then it will take a very long to dry.

Polar Fleece Blankets

Polar fleece is another material that insulates very well. Many people use the wool blankets for outside survival and polar fleece is typically used for inside emergencies. Fleece blankets are very lightweight and can be folded down easily and compact.

The fleece blanket absorbs water so you will have to be careful not to get it soaked. Even though it can absorb water, it will dry out quickly so it won’t be damp for long like wool. Fleece can melt so you will have to keep it away from hot things that way it won’t catch on fire.

Overall, polar fleece is more for an indoor survival bunker. It is not windproof and it can get damaged easily. It does absorb water to keep you dry and it dry’s quickly. You can find polar fleece blankets at all different price ranges.

Pros

  • Very soft and comfortable to the touch.
  • Can be folded down compactly.
  • Dry’s quickly when it is wet.
  • Can wash and dry this blanket very easily.
  • Very affordable.

Cons

  • It doesn’t help insolate when it gets wet.
  • Can catch fire easily.
  • Absorbs water quickly so it is not waterproof.

Tips for Using a Mylar Blanket

People assume that all you have to do is pull the mylar blanket out and start using it. Sorry to say it doesn’t work that way. Mylar is a type of technology and it is important to know how to use it.

  • Mylar can tear and puncture very easily. When you are taking out your mylar blanket for the first time make sure you pull it out very carefully. If you pull it out to fast there is a change of snagging and possibly ripping the mylar blanket.
  • Mylar helps contain your body heat. It will not generate its own heat from the sun to keep you warm. The main goal that mylar achieve is blocking out wind and water and keeping your own body heat trapped inside the blanket.
  • Have more than one mylar blanket with you. If you are going on a survival journey, we highly recommend bringing two to three mylar blankets with you.
  • Never put a mylar blanket over your face. You will end up trapping the co2 inside the blanket and when you have to much co2 and not enough oxygen you will end up fainting or passing out.
  • Try to find a big mylar blanket that can be wrapped around your entire body. They make these blankets in all different sizes so find the one that will cover most of your body.

Common Uses for an Emergency Blanket

There are many things you can do with a survival blanket other than just keeping it for warmth. Check out this list to give you some ideas before you embark on your next adventure.

  • Warmth – around your body, insulator in your sleeping back, insulator in your shelter.
  • Reflective emergency signal to planes.
  • Water resistant – can be used to protect yourself in the rain.
  • Can be used as aluminum foil to heat up food at a campsite.
  • Use small pieces on a lure to catch some fish – yum dinner.
  • Can be used as a medical tourniquet or a compression bandage.
  • Water carrying device or to catch rain water.
  • Reflect the sun using the aluminum to start a fire.
  • Cut into long strips tying them to tree branches to create a trail.
  • Make a sling to rest a broken/sprained arm.

Survival Blanket FAQ

Q: What is a Survival Blanket?

A: Survival blankets are blankets that are used in a wide variety of situations. Survival blankets will retain the heat giving off on your body. They are supposed to trap in your heat and keep you warm in extreme survival situations and weather situations.

Most of all the survival blankets I have talked about in my article above of the best survival blankets have the three W’s. the three W’s stand for water, weather, and windproof. With that in mind if you get caught in any situation that involves cold and weather or water you will want to have a survival blanket handy.

Survival blankets have been used to help people when they are camping, hiking, hunting, and even fishing. They also are a big help for firefighters, EMT’s, and campsite rangers to carry around. Even someone running a marathon needs a survival blanket because after you run for so long your body starts to lose a lot of heat and putting on a survival blanket will push the heat back to you.

Q: What Is A Survival Blanket Made Of?

A: There are three main materials that survival blankets can be made out of. The first is mylar; mylar is a blanket that is made from an aluminum or silver material. Mylar is water, wind, and weatherproof material which means they will protect you in the harsh elements that you may face. The difference between the other types of survival blankets is that mylar is not very durable. Mylar can rip, tear, and even puncture very easily.

The second, type of survival blanket is a wool blanket. A wool blanket is similar to the mylar blanket as it will block you from water, wind, and weather. You do not want to get your wool blankety completely drenched with water because it does take a very long time for the fibers to dry out. One of the more positive aspects of wool is that they are fire resistant. It still isn’t recommended to set your blanket near the fire but if embers spark from your campfire your blanket should be fine.

The third and final, type of survival blanket is the polar fleece. This is another material that insolates heat very well. Now unlike wool and mylar being outside emergency blankets, polar fleece is typically used for indoor emergencies. These are perfect for survival bunkers or safe rooms in your home. Polar fleece is not windproof or waterproof so they are not ideal outdoors in harsh weather.

Q: Why are Survival Blankets Silver?

A: The only type of survival blanket that is silver is mylar. Mylar is silver because it helps reflect heat. This means that when your body heat is evaporating it will hit the reflective nature of the silver and reflect back towards you regaining you up to 80% of your body heat. It is important to remember that is alone will not keep you warm. Remember to wear lots of layers when going out in extreme temperatures.

Another reason why mylar is silver is that it is reflective. If you are in need of help mylar is great for signaling somebody from far away or even in the sky. It’s basically like a SOS for your body so people can see you.

Q: How to Use a Survival Blanket?

A: In basic terms, wrap that thing around you and stay warm. If you are someone who really needs deep instruction on how to use a survival blanket then I can help you. The shiny side on a mylar blanket is used to reflect heat back to you. So if it is cold you want the shiny side next to your body. Now if you are having a heat stroke or you are so hot use the shiny side on the outside to reflect the sun off of you.

Some mylar blankets are both sided with the shiny aluminum. Some blankets only have one-sided and, in that case, follow the directions above to either keep you warm or to keep you cool.

Q: How Does a Survival Blanket Work?

A: Every day without our knowledge we lose heat from our body. This can be a good and bad thing for us. It’s good because during the summer our body loses heat to cool us off but, in the winter, if our body loses heat you can get rather cold.

The survival blankets work hard to keep all the body heat that radiates off of you to keep in trapped into your body.  This works very effectively trapping up to 90% of heat coming off your body. In simplest terms the blanket works as recycled heat, taking the heat your radiating off and pushing it back towards you.

Q: How Effective are Survival Blankets?

A: Survival/emergency blankets are not 100% effective. Let’s be honest nothing is 100% effective nowadays. When you are shopping for an emergency blanket you want to look for at least 80% heat trap that will transfer back to your body. There are some brands on the market that do not give back 80%. Don’t even waste your time with those companies.

Look for the brands that have a higher number if possible. All the mylar blankets I have reviewed are 90% of heat trapped or higher! As for wool blankets, they are very effective but they are not as reflective so if you are in a dire emergency situation it might be harder for people to see you.

Q: Can I Use My Emergency Blanket Instead of a Regular Blanket?

A: No, emergency blankets should really only be used in emergency situations. If you are extremely cold and can’t bare it outside then yes, break out your emergency blanket. I suggest still using regular blankets along with your emergency blanket. Layers are important so layer up and use your emergency blanket when you are out in the rain, hiking, or for shelter purposes.

Q: How Warm are Survival Blankets?

A: I can’t really answer this question with an exact temperature that will radiate off of the survival blanket. What I can tell you is that it reflects your own body heat back to you. So, your own body’s temperature whatever it may be, 98.6 will be reflected back to you keeping that same temperature.

Wool blankets are known to insulate body heat just as well as the mylar or space blankets. They do not have the exact number of how warm they get either but usually, they are going to be a lot warmer than the outside temperature.

Q: Are Wool Survival Blankets Fire Retardant?

A: Yes, naturally wool blankets are fire retardant. This is a great feature of wool because one they insulate good but also if you’re sitting around a campfire you don’t have to worry about a few embers landing on your wool blanket. Now if you were in a regular blanket or a sleeping bag it could start a fire. This does not mean that you can catch your wool blanket on fire and it will be fine; that is not the case. They will burn if caught on fire, but they can withstand a few embers flying around not catching the wool on fire.

Q: How Long Do Survival Blankets Last?

A: This really depends on what type of emergency blanket you purchase. If you purchase a mylar/space blanket then honestly you might only get one use out of it. They are very thin and can tear very easily. If you somehow don’t end up tearing yours then folding it back up compactly will be a challenge.

Wool and polar fleece material blankets can be used longer because they are made of stronger more durable materials. They can be washed and dried to be used over again more than once. They will give you the same advantages as mylar blankets but they will come at a higher cost.

Mylar blankets are still great to have in emergency situations because they can be used just about anywhere at any time. I would suggest purchasing some mylar blankets as well as wool because they are super inexpensive and great to have in a first aid kit.

When you are in an emergency situation you need to have all the necessary things accessible to you. People forget about how important it is to maintain your body heat.
